Should I Buy a Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Gucci Bag I Can't Really Afford?

Updated 3 November 2026 · about 4 min read

Wanting a designer bag is normal, and buying one isn't automatically a mistake. Plenty of people save for a Louis Vuitton Speedy, a Chanel flap bag or a Gucci Jackie and use it for a decade. The problem is buying one you can't really afford: putting it on a credit card, splitting it into buy-now-pay-later payments, or taking it out of money meant for something else. A new Louis Vuitton Speedy costs around $1,750 to $2,300, and a Chanel flap bag over $10,000. Here's an honest way to decide whether this is a treat you've earned or a purchase you'll regret.

What designer bags cost

Approximate new prices for the bags people want most:

Bag Approximate new price
Louis Vuitton Speedy or Neverfull $1,750–$2,300
Gucci Jackie or GG Marmont $2,000–$3,500
Dior Saddle or Lady Dior $4,000–$6,500
Chanel Classic Flap $10,000+
Hermès Birkin $10,000+, and hard to buy at retail at all

The affordability test

You can afford it if all of these are true:

  1. You can pay in full, in cash, today, without touching your emergency fund.
  2. You have an emergency fund of at least three months of essential expenses.
  3. You have no credit card debt you're carrying month to month.
  4. It won't delay something bigger you care about: a deposit, a trip, paying off a loan.
  5. You've wanted this specific bag for at least a month. Not a bag; this one.

If any of these is a "no", the answer is "not yet", not "never".

The cost-per-wear trap

"It works out at a dollar a wear" is the most common justification. It's true only if you actually wear it that much. A $2,000 bag used twice a week for five years is about $4 a wear. The same bag used for special occasions, ten times a year, is $40 a wear. Be honest about which you are.

It's a cousin of girl math: a real calculation used to make a feeling sound like a plan.

"But it holds its value": Louis Vuitton vs Chanel vs Gucci

Some bags do. Louis Vuitton typically resells for 60 to 85 percent of retail, and Chanel and Hermès can resell for more. That softens the cost, but it doesn't make it an investment. You'll still lose some of the price, plus resale fees, and only if you keep it in excellent condition. Gucci, Coach and Michael Kors lose much more. Buy it because you love it, not as a plan to make money.

Don't finance it

Buy-now-pay-later and credit cards make a $2,000 bag feel like $167 a month. That's the danger: it removes the "can I afford this?" moment. If you need to split it into payments, you can't afford it yet. Our guide to whether buy now, pay later is bad covers why it makes overspending so easy.

Cheaper ways to get the bag you want

  • Buy pre-owned from a reseller that authenticates. You'll typically pay 30 to 50 percent less, and lose less if you sell later.
  • Choose the classic, not the trend. Classic styles hold value and stay in fashion. Seasonal colours and novelty shapes don't.
  • Sell what you're not using to fund it: an old bag, unworn clothes, things gathering dust.

Save for it instead

Turning "I want it now" into "I'm getting it in five months" changes everything. You get the anticipation, which research suggests is a big part of the pleasure, and you find out if you still want it. Our guide to saving for something you want walks through a simple plan: divide the price by the months, automate the transfer, and watch it fill.

Make the wanting go somewhere

Cake, an iOS app in development, is built around this: you put the bag on a cake sized by its price, $5 a slice. Skipped purchases and good habits fill the slices while the money adds up in a virtual jar. When the cake is full, you decide if you still want it. If you do, you buy it in full, and it feels like a reward rather than a regret.

Common questions

Is it worth buying a designer bag?

It can be, if you can pay in full without debt or dipping into savings, you've wanted that bag for a while, and you'll use it often. It's not a good use of borrowed money.

Should I use buy now, pay later for a designer bag?

No. If you need to spread the cost, you can't afford it yet. Save for it instead.

Do designer bags hold their value?

Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès hold value well; many other brands lose half or more. Even the best are not reliable investments.

Is it better to buy a designer bag new or used?

Used from a reputable reseller is usually better value: 30 to 50 percent cheaper, with less loss if you resell.
