Is Kalshi Gambling? How to Stop Betting on Kalshi and Polymarket
Kalshi and Polymarket call themselves prediction markets, and legally they're treated differently from sportsbooks. But if you're putting money on who wins tonight's game, it works exactly like betting, and it can get out of hand the same way. On Kalshi, sports make up the large majority of what people trade. If you're losing money, trading at 2am, or "just checking" the app during every game, it's worth treating it the way you'd treat any betting habit.
Is Kalshi gambling?
Legally, Kalshi is regulated by the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which treats its contracts as financial "event contracts" rather than bets. That's why it's available in states where sports betting isn't legal, and why several states are fighting it in court. In practice, buying a "yes" contract on a team to win is a bet on the outcome: you pay now, and you're paid if you're right.
A few differences make prediction markets easier to slide into:
- Lower age limits. Kalshi lets users trade from 18, while most sportsbooks require you to be 21.
- "Research" branding. It feels like investing or forecasting, not gambling, so it's easier to justify, and less alarming to friends and family.
- Everything is a market. Elections, the weather, award shows and sports all sit side by side, so there's always something to trade.
- Your balance stays on the platform. Kalshi has paid interest on balances, which encourages leaving money in, ready to bet.
What about Polymarket?
Polymarket works the same way: you buy "yes" or "no" shares on an outcome and get paid if you're right. A few things make it different from Kalshi:
- It started out on crypto. The international site uses USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, so money moves through a crypto wallet. Spending crypto tends to feel less real than spending dollars, which makes losses easier to ignore.
- Its US history is complicated. Polymarket paid a $1.4 million penalty to the CFTC in 2022 and blocked US users. In 2025 it bought a CFTC-licensed exchange and began rolling out a regulated US app, which quickly climbed to the top of the App Store's sports chart.
- It has a market on almost everything, from elections to celebrity news to sports, open around the clock.
- It's social. Big wins and "whale" bets get shared widely online, which makes betting look smarter and more normal than it is.
Everything below applies to Polymarket too. If you've been using the international site through a VPN, stopping is even more important: you're outside the protections of the regulated US version.
Signs it's become a problem
- You're betting more to win back losses.
- You check prices constantly, during work or late at night.
- You hide it, or feel uneasy when you see your real total.
- It's money you need for other things.
How to stop
- Use the platform's limits and self-exclusion. Kalshi says it offers self-exclusion and limits similar to sportsbooks; check your Polymarket account settings for the same tools.
- Delete the apps and block the sites with Screen Time or a gambling-blocking app.
- Ask your bank to block gambling transactions and remove saved cards. Many banks offer this. If you use Polymarket with crypto, move funds out of the wallet you bet from, or close it.
- Add up deposits minus withdrawals. Seeing the real number is often what makes people stop.
- Tell someone you trust, and see how to stop sports betting for more.
Get support
If you're struggling to stop, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER, the National Problem Gambling Helpline. It's free and confidential, and it covers prediction markets too.
Put the money toward something real
Cake, an iOS app in development, helps you redirect the impulse: put something you actually want on a cake sized by its price, $5 a slice, and every trade you skip fills slices while the money adds up in a virtual jar. It's not a replacement for support if betting has become a serious problem, but it makes progress visible.
